Chatter Report: Pompliano Praises Bitcoin Performance, Antonopoulos Says Death Spiral ‘Unlikely’ In today’s Chatter Report, we explore the different ways crypto influencers have been responding to the low prices of 2018. Some are unfazed like Anthony Pompliano, who still believes that bitcoin is the best performing asset. Others are reassuring like Andreas Antonopoulos, who has been busy addressing concerns about bitcoin being in a death spiral. The rest are pensive like James McAvity, who has been theorizing about which miners are holding their coins rather than selling them. Also Read: Paxful Completes Second School in Rwanda #BuiltWithBitcoin Bitcoin is the ‘Best Performing Asset’ Anthony Pompliano, founder of Morgan Creek Digital, sparked a fervent discussion on Twitter when he noted that the S&P had almost lost $755 billion in a single day. Pompliano was putting losses in perspective for cryptocurrency investors, as public equity investors lost more money in a single day than crypto investors did for all of 2018. Crypto Twitter quickly fired back, as former Wall Street trader John Todaro pointed out the unfair nature of comparing two markets that have different capitalizations. Todaro expanded more on the misleading nature of Pompliano’s tweet, arguing that they should be comparing percentage gains/losses and not raw figures. Yeah but different mkt sizes obviously. So when the S&P 500 rises 3% in a day, you'll say us stocks made more money than all of crypto combined? — John Todaro (@JohnTodaro1) December 4, 2018 Another commenter, Alamentarius, argued that it was unfair to compare the “equity value of every public company” with a “speculative project that turned into a bubble.” Bitcoin outperformed the S&P 500 for last 10 years, 5 years, and last 2 years. It will outperform over next 10 too. It’s irresponsible for investors to have zero exposure to the best performing asset. — Pomp (@APompliano) December 4, 2018 Unfazed, Pompliano defended his initial claims, citing the historical financial performance of bitcoin compared to the S&P. He then boldly described bitcoin as the “best performing asset” on the market. Andreas Antonopoulos on Bitcoin Death Spirals With bitcoin prices falling day by day, the ecosystem has been expressing concern about a potential death spiral. To address these concerns, “Mastering Bitcoin” author Andreas Antonopoulos put out a Youtube video explaining death spirals and why he believes they are unlikely scenarios. Antonopoulos explained that death spirals are triggered by a combination of economic factors crashing the bitcoin price and/or governments shutting down or outlawing mining. This drives down the price of bitcoin, so miners start turning off their mining equipment. The result is a severe drop in mining hash power, or 50 percent in this hypothetical scenario. As mining power falls by half, blocks start to come up every 20 minutes instead of every 10 minutes. Since bitcoin mining difficulty adjustments are calculated every 2,016 blocks, it now takes four weeks for the difficulty to change instead of two weeks. This slows the network down further, which could lead miners to decide that they aren’t making enough profit. As a result, more and more miners would then decide to shut off their equipment, leading to a vicious downward cycle known as the bitcoin “death spiral.” After explaining the death spiral, Antonopoulos claimed it is unlikely to happen because miners have a much “long[er]-term perspective.” Since investing in mining equipment requires a huge up-front cost and electricity is purchased on long-term plans, most miners won’t stop mining, as they will assume that profitability will return within a few months. Do Miners Hold or Sell Their Bitcoin? Other bitcoiners also have been theorizing about what miners might do with their bitcoin in an extended bear market. As commenter James McAvity noted, the circumstances surrounding each particular mining operation will determine whether miners sell their bitcoins or hold on to them. Unlikely to sell immediately: – Miners who hedged with futures & options when prices were higher – Smaller ops that have free power(dorms, home heaters, solar home operations) – Money launderers trying to clean cash into new coins – High inflation areas like Venezuela etc. — James McAvity (@jamesmcavity) December 4, 2018 McAvity explained that miners that can generate ancillary free power and businesses that are struggling to survive are the ones that are more likely to sell their bitcoins immediately after mining them. By contrast, miners that hold their bitcoins are those that have hedged with futures and options when prices were higher. They could also be smaller operations that have free power or they could be money launderers trying to clean cash by turning it into bitcoin. The terms of the sponsorship cover the Litecoin logo being displayed on the Octagon’s canvas which the foundation hopes can bring new people to hear about it for the first time. “There are several reasons why we think it makes sense for Litecoin to step into UFC’s world-famous Octagon now,” the group stated. “Over the last 25 years, UFC, the world’s premier mixed martial arts organization, has evolved from a tiny grassroots movement to a global phenomenon, largely based on the extremely passionate community it has cultivated along the way. We see many parallels to Litecoin in this way as our amazing community has been instrumental in our growth and providing unwavering passion and enthusiasm that continues to propel us forward.” The cryptocurrency community has a strong record of supporting such sports events. Back in May for example, the mixed martial artist (MMA) Mei Yamaguchi was sponsored by Bitcoin.com as she faced the Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee. Dash has also previously provided sponsorship for fighters. 5% of Israelis Report Investing in Bitcoin Bezeq, one of the largest telecom companies in Israel, released its 2018 State of the Internet Report on Wednesday. The report, based on data from Bezeq’s own system as well as a survey of 1,300 people aged 13 and above, revealed several interesting statistics about Israelis’ online habits during the year. The figures show that cryptocurrency adoption still has a long way to go Israel, with only 5 percent of people in the country having invested in or used BTC and digital coins. Moreover, a total of 44 percent of Israelis say they either don’t know what Bitcoin is or just don’t understand the concept. In contrast, 42 percent of people have reported using the direct money transfer apps that the big banks in Israel having been pushing hard over the last year in an attempt to stay relevant in the digital age. Crypto Mining Malware Boomed in 2018 McAfee, the cyber security company formerly led by the notorious crypto influencer of the same name, has released its latest Threat Report, highlighting notable cybercrime trends in Q3 of 2018. The report states that the “Cryptomining Boom Times Continue,” with covertly mining cryptocurrency via malware one of the big stories of 2018. Total instances of coin miner malware have grown more than 4,000 percent in the past year, despite the bear market. The report also shows that malware miners have been installed via exploits in everything for Macs to routers, media players and even very small IoT devices. “Cryptominers will take advantage of any reliable scenario,” the researchers noted. “We would not usually think of using routers or IoT devices such as IP cameras or video recorders as cryptominers because their CPUs are not as powerful as those in desktop and laptop computers. However, due to the lack of proper security controls, cybercriminals can benefit from volume over CPU speed. If they can control thousands of devices that mine for a long time, they can still make money.” Bank of America’s Latest Blockchain Patent Bank of America, who we reported on back in August as having filed a patent regarding the custody of cryptocurrencies, has applied for another blockchain-related patent. Documents from the U.S. Patent and Trademarks Office made public on December 25 cover the use of the technology for “banking systems controlled by data bearing records.” The bank writes in the application that, among other things, blockchain technology may be used by automated teller machines to accelerate transaction speeds or facilitate other types of transactions in addition to ATM transactions such as cash withdrawals and deposits or gift registry transactions. Additionally, ATMs may use blockchain technology to track transactions, thereby enabling a larger amount of transaction volume while reducing physical cash transportation needs. Bitcoin (BTC) Price Analysis: Back to Support, Bulls Overpowered? Bitcoin is still stuck in its symmetrical triangle consolidation pattern after getting rejected on the test of resistance. Price is nearing the bottom of the triangle around the $3,900 mark and a break lower could signal that bears have gotten the upper hand. The 100 SMA is still above the longer-term 200 SMA to suggest that the path of least resistance is to the upside or that support is more likely to hold than to break. A dip below the triangle bottom could still find a floor at the 200 SMA dynamic inflection point at $3,800 which might be the line in the sand for a potential bounce. A break below this could send bitcoin down by the same height as the chart formation, which spans $3,200 to around $4,400. Similarly a break past the triangle top around $4,100 could lead to a rally of the same size. RSI is on the move down so bitcoin might follow suit while sellers are in control. Stochastic is also heading lower to signal the presence of bearish momentum. The oscillators have some room to cover before hitting oversold levels, which suggests that sellers could stay on top of the game for much longer. Bitcoin was off to a good start for the year as optimism may have been in play. A huge part of this was likely due to expectations of institutional investments kicking in and lifting volumes in the months ahead. However, traders would like to see evidence of this actually taking place before piling on long positions and holding on to those much longer. For now, it looks like traders are still being their usual cautious selves and booking profits quickly off any bounces. The presence of risk aversion in financial markets as traders are still reacting to higher US borrowing costs against the backdrop of trade tensions and the government shutdown is also weighing on demand for crypto. Will RBI’s Crypto Ban Stand? Supreme Court of India Orders for Clear Crypto Regulations Bitcoin prices may be down but there is some wonderful development in India. Like China, cryptocurrency trading is illegal in the country thanks in part to the heavy handedness of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). But things are about to change. It has been reported that the Indian Government has been given four weeks to draft clear cryptocurrency regulations by the Supreme Court before the court make rulings on pending crypto related cases. If not, sources reveal, the court will make their independent ruling and perhaps reverse the current ban instituted by the RBI. The Supreme Court of India has asked the Indian Government to finalize it’s policy decision on cryptocurrency regulations within 4 weeks. If the policy is not made within this timeframe, the supreme court will make its own ruling.#IndiaBitcoin #IndiaWantsCrypto pic.twitter.com/0L9VgfSoEk — Sunny Ray (@SunnyRayShow) February 25, 2019 The RBI Crypto Ban In April 2018, the RBI in a circular (DBR.No.BP.BC.104 /08.13.102/2017-18) ordered all banks under its control to cease offering services to customers and businesses dealing with cryptocurrencies. “In view of the associated risks, it has been decided that, with immediate effect, entities regulated by the Reserve Bank shall not deal in VCs or provide services for facilitating any person or entity in dealing with or settling VCs. Such services include maintaining accounts, registering, trading, settling, clearing, giving loans against virtual tokens, accepting them as collateral, opening accounts of exchanges dealing with them and transfer / receipt of money in accounts relating to purchase/ sale of VCs.” However, in the past, the RBI admitted that they had instituted the ban without due diligence. Even so and despite engagement with crypto exchanges and other businesses, the bank did not bulge on their stand. After July 25, 2018, all banks ceased from supporting fiat deposits and withdrawals forcing exchanges to issue warning statements. Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) Petition In response to this consequential ban, several petitions were filled with the objective of lifting the ban. Amongst the many, the one filled by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) whose members include the country’s leading exchanges like Zebpay, UnoCoin and Wazirx, has been drawing a lot of media attention. Wazirx did launch a crypto peer to peer service utilizing escrow accounts and by-passing the smothering RBI ban. In Jul 2018, Founder and CEO of Wazirx, Nischal Shetty said: “If banks stop providing services after July 6th then we’ll need to launch P2P. All eyes are on banks now to see what they will do. Do they wait for the July 20th hearing or do they go ahead and implement the ban on transactions from July 6th onwards?” The association continue to hold that businesses are suffering because of RBI’s unconstitutional restrictions. It has been reported that the cryptocurrency recommendation from the task force set up by the Ministry of Finance have been finalized but it is unlikely that findings will be relayed to be public in days the near future as the task force is proceeding with “utmost caution”.
